Take a quick scan of your living or workspace. Is it cluttered or spacious? Is it organized or chaotic? You may be surprised to discover that the extent to which you feel stress in your mind may be directly related to the amount of clutter in your environment.
In light of stress awareness month coming up in April, it's the perfect time to double-dip on benefits from your spring cleaning efforts. Take the following action steps to clear space for a clean environment and a peaceful mind.
1. Choose what: Identify your first project to tackle. You know the one. It’s been on your to-do list for weeks, months, or years and often occupies precious real estate in your mind. Yep, that one. Perhaps it’s time to commit to purging that crowded closet or overflowing sock drawer. Maybe the garage or attic could use some organizing. Is your kitchen pantry filled with expired canned goods or food products? Spring into action and mark that to-do off your list.
2. Choose when: Commit to a day, time, and duration to work on your project. Schedule it in your calendar. Set a reminder. Enroll a friend for accountability. Do whatever is necessary to ensure you show up ready to get busy when the day comes.
3. Choose what stays and what goes: When it comes to tough decisions, asking the following questions can help to guide you: Do you still love it? Does it represent who you are now? Have you used it within the last two years? Does it serve a current purpose? Would taking a photo of it suffice to keep the memory alive? Might someone else give it more attention?
4. Choose to make it fun: You are more likely to do a project if you perceive it as fun. Recruit friends and family, blast your favorite music, open a bottle of wine, host a clothing exchange party, get the kids involved by encouraging them to donate their toys and clothes to children in need.
Your home is your sanctuary from the chaotic world outside. Keeping it clean and organized will provide you with a place to recharge and thrive. Your future peaceful mind will thank you.
